Welcome to That DAM Artist!
Sculptor, flute carver, painter and musician…A young man of numerous talents, this vibrant Native American began to nurture his creative talents at a young age, growing up in New Mexico, South Dakota and Montana. His mother is a member of the Potawatomi and Ottawa people. His father is a member of the Mohawk and Cayuga people.
David has let his creative talents rise to the challenges put forth by the demands of the fine arts. He is known for combining traditional and contemporary "feeling" in sculptures of stone, wood and bronze. David brings out the natural beauty in each media that few people can resist. He has won numerous awards for his endeavors. Many times a sculpture becomes the "holder" of an intricately carved flute, this type of sculpture takes a twofold purpose. The flute then becomes a playable instrument. "The flutes have to meet my expectations, not only from a visual standpoint, but more importantly from a tonal quality." It is this attention to detail and quality of workmanship that has taken David's art around the globe.
A few of his most notable achievements are:
· Carved the chair Pope John Paul II sat upon while conducting mass for the Native Americans held in the Arizona Veterans' Memorial Coliseum.
· A one man show at the Museum of Natural History, Washington, DC (Smithsonian Institution)
· Resident artist at the Heard Museum, Phoenix, Arizona for six years.
· A one man show in Florence Italy.
David is also a talented musician. He founded and currently plays with the band Clan/destine. They are continually touring the globe, performing traditional and contemporary music and dance. The Native American flute, bass guitar and some vocals are David's contribution to Clan/destine. Clan/destine writes and plays all original music. David believes it is imperative to maintain a balance in every aspect of life.
